“WAGON RIDE” Oil, acrylic, cold wax, and paper mixed media on heavy paper. 18”w x 12”h. March 2024
This is a collage study for a larger painting I plan to do in the near future. Adding cold wax to my materials is a new adventure for me, which I’m enjoying greatly. The technique I used is to first adhere my paper elements to the heavy paper support with an archival glue. Paper elements included book pages, my drawings and simple acrylic designs I painted over a brown shopping bag. then I coated that with an acrylic medium to protect it. When the acrylic was dry, I sanded the surface to soften it from sharp edges. The rest of the procedure was in cold wax and oil application. Painting the faces was done with a fine brush, but most of the time I prefer using larger brushes and palette knives which help keep the style from getting too tight.

“Backlit Hill” Painting in progress. From a photo I took on an outing. I’ll photograph it again once it is finished, but at a different angle to get rid of the glare in upper left corner. Oil on wood panel. 24” x 18” Jan 2024
UPDATE: The image below shows the same painting with major alterations. It’s just what sometimes happens when the painting insists on its own way, and alters the artist’s original plan. The piece may be finished - I’m thinking about it, but there is still glare, now on the right side of the painting. Photographing oils is a skill beyond me, so far.
“GOLD PATH” Oil and cold wax on wooden panel. 18”w x 24”h March 2024
This is the continuation of the ‘Backlit Hill’ picture above. I decided to lighten the theme, and turned the shadow side of a mountain into a dry grass field hugging a lake. This morphed the hillside into a flat plain. While retaining many of the original houses and trees, I went with additional abstract elements, such as the flat building in front, and a free for all perspective with sail boats. The top of the hill was pushed way back simply by lightening it with mist. When I painted over “Backlit Hill” to arrive at this new version, I made sure to keep much of it intact. Had I repainted everything, all the history would have been lost.
